Fashion Place Entrance and Concourse
Entrance, vestibule, concourse feature wall and floor tile at the Macy’s end of Fashion Place in Murray.
Cottonwood Contractors was general contractor for the entrance and concourse remodel at the Macy’s end of Fashion Place in Murray. The work ran from the exterior entry inward — the entrance and its vestibule, the dark tile feature wall down the length of the concourse, and the large-format floor tile through both.
Retail common areas are unusually unforgiving to build. They are seen from every angle, under even light, by people with nothing to do but look at them while they walk. The feature wall is laid in a stacked bond rather than a running bond, which means every joint lines up with the one above it — there is no offset to lose a millimetre in, and any deviation stays legible for the full length of the wall.
The floor is the same problem in the other plane. Large-format tile with black inlay bands has to be set out from the storefront line rather than from whichever corner is convenient, because the bands are what the eye follows down the concourse. If they run out of parallel with the shopfronts, no amount of quality in the tiling itself will hide it.
What went into it
- Exterior entrance beneath a cedar-slatted soffit, with stone-panel piers, full-height glazed doors and a grey tile base
- Entry vestibule with a recessed walk-off mat set flush into the tile, leaving no raised edge across the threshold
- Concourse feature wall in dark linear tile, laid in a stacked bond where every joint aligns and nothing can be lost in the pattern
- Framed backlit lightboxes and staggered white light bars set into the wall, with openings and power coordinated ahead of the tile
- Large-format cream floor tile with black inlay bands, set out to the storefront line so the bands run true down the concourse
- Floor tile carried continuously from the vestibule out into the concourse, so the entry does not read as a separate room
