Local knowledge

What building in South Salt Lake actually involves

South Salt Lake is one of the smaller cities in the valley and one of the oldest in character. Much of the housing went up between the 1900s and the 1950s on compact lots, close to the rail and industry that gave the city its start.

It is also changing quickly. The S-Line corridor has brought new mixed-use development with it, and the older housing nearby is increasingly being bought and improved rather than cleared.

My house is small — is an addition the only answer?
A 900-square-foot bungalow rarely needs an addition to work better; it needs the walls in different places. Opening a boxed-in kitchen into the living space usually transforms how the house feels, and at this scale the beam work is straightforward.
What condition will the plumbing and wiring be in?
Houses of this age routinely still carry galvanised supply lines, 60- or 100-amp panels and original cast-iron drains. All three are cheapest to replace while a remodel already has the walls open.
Can I finish the basement in a house this old?
Many of these homes have low, unfinished basements never intended as living space. Whether one can legally be finished comes down to ceiling height and egress, so it is worth confirming before anyone plans a bedroom down there.
Do I need a permit for this in South Salt Lake?
Anything structural, electrical, mechanical or plumbing does. South Salt Lake issues its own building permits through its building division, and we prepare the submittal, book the inspections and carry the job through to final sign-off — you are not left managing that yourself.
