What building in Copperton actually involves

Copperton is unlike anywhere else in Salt Lake County. It was built as a company town by the Utah Copper Company from 1926 — a planned community for mine employees, designed as a showpiece rather than thrown up as housing.

The Copperton Historic District was added to the National Register in 1986 and takes in around two hundred houses: bungalows and period cottages, some in Tudor or Spanish Colonial Revival styles, laid out on a grid around a ten-acre park.

Can I change the outside of a Copperton house?
In a district like this the streetscape is a real part of what a house is worth. Porches, rooflines, window proportions and materials repay being matched carefully — a mismatched replacement is visible from the pavement and expensive to undo.
Does the historic district stop me modernising inside?
Being in a National Register district does not freeze the inside of a house. Kitchens and bathrooms can be brought completely up to date, and generally should be, provided the work respects the original room proportions where they earn their keep.
What should I expect inside a 1920s Copperton bungalow?
Expect original wiring, plaster on lath, minimal insulation and small original bathrooms. All are solvable, and a remodel is the cheapest moment to solve them.
Do I need a permit for this in Copperton?
Anything structural, electrical, mechanical or plumbing does. Copperton issues its own building permits through its building division, and we prepare the submittal, book the inspections and carry the job through to final sign-off — you are not left managing that yourself.
